An unexpected win from Marin Cilic happened in Cincinnati Masters 2016 on Sunday. That same event ended the longest 22 game run from the British defending champion, Andy Murray.
Marin Cilic, a 27-year-old Croatian professional tennis player, defeated the two-time defending champion and the world no. 2-ranked, Andy Murray, in the recent Cincinnati Masters 2016. Within an hour and a half, the British champion lost with 6-4, 7-5 within three sets.
The upset resulted in an unpredicted end of Andy Murray’s long straight historic wins from Queen’s Club, Wimbledon as well as Rio Olympics this year. Aside from that, his loss against an underdog also made history.
Though Murray was able to regain his nerve during the second round, he wasn’t able to maintain it and succeed guarding his title in the third set. Cilic, on the other hand, showed no signs of fatigue.
He was able to give lethal and thunderous serves during the match. His stunning performance on the court gave the crowd a hint of his winning. Live Tennis emphasized that this was his first Master’s final match since he participated years ago. Yet, the Croatian underdog didn’t foretell about defeating the top-seeded Murray.
Albeit the disappointing results, the 29-year-old British champion still remained positive and proud of what he has achieved after successive wins this year since months ago.
“I’m very proud of this week. Obviously, today didn’t go how I would have wanted. I certainly didn’t expect to get to the final when I got here. It was a very, very positive week. I’m looking forward to a few days’ rest,” he said during the media interview.
Through defeating Cincinnati Masters’ defending champion, Cilic immediately earned his second biggest title in his tennis career aside from the US Open tournament in 2014. In addition to that, his first Cincinnati Masters win also resulted in his return to ATP Ranking’s top ten tennis title holders.
With that being said, he felt grateful for the opportunity to dispatch a player like Andy Murray. The same source noted his big relief with the said outcome. Being able to get into the top ten in ATP Rankings is considered a huge step for his future career in tennis.
