Tennis superstars Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic vows vengeance from their Olympic Games slump in Rio as top seeds in the women’s and men’s division of the 2016 US Open.
Williams failed to get her third gold medal in the singles event in Rio after she bowed out in the third round at the hands of Elina Svitolina of Ukraine. Aside from bouncing back from her Olympic Games failure, Williams also aims to take back her US Open title which she last won in 2014.
Williams aims to snag her seventh title. She would have done a calendar year grand slam last year but Roberta Vinci halted it. Standing in her way is current champion Flavia Pennetta of Italy together with compatriot Vinci. Williams has not played a match since her early exit in the Olympic Games in Rio. She is still recovering from a right shoulder problem.
On the other hand, Djokovic will still be a favorite at the US Open as he is still ranked no. 1 with Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, and Rafael Nadal closely behind. Djokovic guns to defend his crown and hopes to snag a third US Open crown.
Djokovic is poised to once again take the title but Murray and the rest of the contenders will play spoilers to his bid this year. Djokovic, like Williams, is nursing a sore left wrist. Nevertheless, he will go all out to keep his title.
Djokovic has an 11/10 odd of winning the title this year as Murray has 2/1 odds of taking home the title. Williams, however, is also poised to win the title with a 6/4 odd followed by Simona Halep (6/1); Petra Kvitova (8/1); and Garbine Muguruza (9/1).
The US Open will be the last major tennis tournament for the year and both Williams and Djokovic will have to make every game count if they want to stay on top of the world rankings.
