The Madden ’13 cover vote has begun

It is once again time for video game fans to decide who should grace the cover of Madden ’13. Last year Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis beat out Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick in the final round and was on the cover. This year the fans are even more involved.

Each of the 32 NFL teams has two players going against each other in the first play-in round. The voting takes place on ESPN’s SportsNation website.

Voting takes place from March 7-21 and the field of 64 players will be narrowed down to 32. Some interesting matchups in the play-in round include Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow vs. Von Miller, Giants wide-receiver Victor Cruz vs. Jason Pierre-Paul and the battle between the Oakland Raiders kicker and punter, Sebastian Janikowski vs. Shane Lechler.

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski made a video on YouTube explaining to his fans why they should select him for the cover. This video can be viewed here.

With each new video game that is released, the issue of the “Madden curse” is discussed. For the most part, the athlete who is on the cover usually gets hurt or has a horrendous season. Peyton Hillis had a breakout year in 2010 and in 2011 was often injured. While the players don’t believe in the curse, you can certainly make a case that there is one.

On March 21, the final 32 players will be announced on move on to the next round.
