Tony Gonzalez announces return to Falcons
After getting a taste of the playoffs last season and coming within a play or two of the Super Bowl, tight end Tony Gonzalez has decided to come back to the Falcons for another shot.
Gonzalez, 37, who had announced that he would retire last season, rescinded this week after the Falcons had spend much of this off season trying to convince him to stay.
Gonzalez was scheduled to be a free agent if he didn’t retire, but he has decided he will stay with a quarterback who he has had tremendous chemistry and success with on the field. He announced via Twitter his decision his decision to stay, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Quarterback Matt Ryan and head coach Mike Smith also took to social media to express their happiness on their star tight-end’s return.
”I think it would be an understatement to say it would be hard to replace Tony with someone in the draft or free agency,” Coach Smith was quoted as saying.
According to ESPN, Gonzalez told his agent John Condon to negotiate a new deal with the team. It will likely be a one-year deal.
