Tony Gonzalez to take one more shot at winning a Super Bowl with Falcons
After 16 years of trying to get just one playoff win and then being a single game away from the Super Bowl, Tony Gonzalez has decided to come back for one more season with the Atlanta Falcons.
“After discussing it with my family and really, truly struggling with this decision, I informed the Falcons that I would like to return for one more shot,” Gonzalez said to FOX Sports. “I am coming back for one reason and one reason only, the chance to win a Super Bowl.”
Gonzalez is the all-time leading receive among tight ends and his 1,242 receptions are are the second most for NFL player. Even in his 30s his productivity has not tapered off. In 18 games total games last season Gonzalez made 107 receptions for 1,069 yards and 10 touchdowns at the age of 36.
The Falcons are happy to have their tight end back for one more season.
“Tony Gonzalez has been so effective for us. To catch over 100 balls in a season as a 36-year-old is unbelievable,” Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
