UFC president Dana White thrashes idea of a Mayweather-McGregor fight

UFC president Dana White is surprised with all the tabloid news about a Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight inside the Octagon. He once and for all came out to dismiss the idea before it gets out of hand and before fans cling on to false hope of having the fight.

White was reacting to the news item released by United Kingdom tabloid The Sun that Mayweather was on the verge of sealing a deal to fight McGregor. It even stated that Mayweather would make a hefty $144 million for the fight while McGregor would get $10.1 million for his part.

White told Kevin Iole that the story is completely fictional and baseless since boxing is far too different from mixed martial arts. White added that no matter how much the fans would want the fight to happen, it will never take place.

“It’s not true; it’s just a tabloid story. And as far as I knew, Floyd is retired and he’s been on a world-wide vacation and hasn’t even been thinking of fighting,” White said.

White explained that Mayweather is enjoying his retirement and that McGregor is McGregor. He stated that he and McGregor are cool and that there is no bad blood between the two of them ever since the UFC has pulled the feisty Irishman from UFC 200 in a supposed rematch with Nate Diaz come July 9.

“We have no problems with Conor. We’re totally cool,” White explained.

White explained that McGregor had an obligation to help in promoting the fight and get media hype for their match which was supposed to be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. However, McGregor did not show up for the scheduled press meet up and even stated on his Facebook account that he is being paid as a fighter and not as a promoter.

While there are wide speculations of Mayweather just lurking around to see who would be fit as his opponent for a possible come back. Name that includes Philippine fighting pride Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Gennady Golovkin have all floated as top front runners to force Mayweather out of retirement, though nothing is certain yet.

Majority of analysts including Top Rank CEO Bob Arum wants a Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch, but both fighters must commit to the fight since both have considered retirement as they only option as of the moment. Khan has been flushing the concept of a fight with Mayweather saying that it’s his time to mess it up with The Money whole Golovkin would sign up in a heartbeat given the chance to fight Mayweather inside the ring.

Thus having Mayweather fight McGregor is absolutely absurd and White is stressing that it would never happen since the UFC is the one promoting The Notorious.
