PBA Semi-Finals 2016: San Miguel erases 22-point deficit to win Game 1 over Rain or Shine

The San Miguel Beermen were able to come back from a 22-point lead to upset the Rain or Shine Elastopainters, 109-105

The Rain or Shine Elastopainters went with a balanced attack in the 1st quarter with 7 players scoring at least a basket but it was Beau Belga who led the charge with 8 points including two 3-point shots. Jun Mar Fajardo had 10 of the 21 points for the San Miguel Beermen and hardly anyone from his team is stepping up to help him.

The 2nd quarter was Belga’s ‘Extra Rice Inc.’ brother’s turn to crack in the defense of San Miguel by scoring 12 points alone in the quarter. Belga scored another 8 points in this quarter while Christ Tiu added 6 points as the Elastopainters are turning the game into a blowout. At the end of the 1st half, Rain or Shine leads 68-50.

In the start of the second half, Rain or Shine continued their dominance over the Beermen behind the efforts of Gabe Norwood and Jericho Cruz. The Elastopainters ended the quarter with a huge 20-point lead, 91-71.


The San Miguel Beermen fought back valiantly in the 4th quarter and managed to trim down the lead to 100-98 by the 4 minute mark behind the hot shooting of Ronald Tubid and Chris Ross but the returning Paul Lee put out the run with just a 3-point shot.

Arwind Santos came back with a 3-point shot to keep the game close in the 3:32 mark and with Jun Mar Fajardo’s free throws the game is tied at 103-all at 2:52 left in the 4th quarter.

Fajardo kept his hot shooting and claimed back the lead with a jump shot at 2:32 but Paul Lee kept the game tied at 105-all.

Chris Ross came back with a 3-point shot to lead at 108-105 in just inside the last 2-minute mark.

RoS’s luck seems to have run out with Paul Lee throwing an error pass to turn the ball over back to San Miguel at 37.4 seconds left. The Elastopainters managed to get back the ball when Chris Ross missed shot but Paul Lee missed his own 3-point shot at 12.3 seconds.

Jeff Chan fouled Ronald Tubid who missed both free throws and that gave Rain or Shine to tie the game with 10.5 seconds left.

With the last chance for Rain or Shine to keep this game to their side, Jeff Chan missed the 3-point shot that could have tied the game. The Elastopainters fouled Arwind Santos sinked in two free throws to seal the game for San Miguel.

“I don’t know what to say but this is unbelievable,” said Coach Leo Austria of San Miguel.

“I thought we are losing this game but i have to give credit to Chris Ross and Ronald Tubid.” said Austria. “I’m so happy with this game, our boss Danding (Cojuanco) is really enjoying this game and he is enjoying. We want to dedicate this win for him.”

Jun Mar Fajardo had a total of 36 points, 18 rebounds and 5 blocks to lead San Miguel and he had help with Arwind Santos chipping in with 19 points and 17 rebounds.
