Victor Cruz wearing a walking boot
The New York Giants were feeling whole again offensively on Sunday night as both Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks were on the field together for the first time since last season. It didn’t last very long though as Cruz left the game on the Giants first drive of the day with what is being called a bruised heel. He was seen walking around the Giants facilities on crutches and in a walking boot.
Cruz skipped voluntary OTAs this season as he was in contract negotiations, and eventually landed a five year, $43 million extension this season for his great play over the last two seasons.
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was a little concerned with the fact that Cruz was on crutches and in a boot. “Now if you look at him, you say, ‘Oh my God, he’s got crutches and boot.’ So they are doing all kinds of stuff to make sure he doesn’t put any pressure on it. But he did a feel a little bit better today,” said Coughlin, according to ESPN.com. Coughlin was hopeful though, that Cruz wouldn’t be out too long.
Cruz took Coughlin’s sentiment a step further and vowed to be ready for the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. “Hopefully I can be ready before two weeks from now. I do envision playing against the Cowboys in opener,” Cruz said, according to CBS Sports. The Giants did say that the boot and crutches were just a precaution and aren’t exactly necessary.
If Cruz and Nicks are both ready and healthy for this upcoming season, they should make up one of the best receiving tandems in the NFL. The Giants are looking to bounce back, as a team, from a season where they failed to reach the playoffs, one year after winning a Super Bowl Championship.
