Victoria Azarenka advances in 3 sets
Victoria Azarenka advanced to the round of 16 on Saturday afternoon after coming back to beat Frenchwoman Alize Cornet in the third round of this year’s U.S. Open, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2.
“The dynamic of the match was a little bit weird for me,” Azarenka told reporters after the match, according to ESPN. “I felt like I didn’t take my opportunities in the first set, which was kind of a waste and it gave her a lot of confidence, and she really came up with the great shots when she needed with the big serves. I’d actually never seen her serve like that before, so that’s definitely a big improvement from her side.”
Cornet indeed was ignited for the game, and came out playing very well, going up 4-1 early in the first set. She was fist pumping and clearly enjoying herself, but it wouldn’t last long, and when Azarenka went up 4-2 in the second set, she never looked back.
The Belarusian closed the set out 6-3 and won the third set 6-2 with some fist pumping of her own, although she did not play her best game, with 38 unforced errors.
Next up will be a fourth-round match versus Serbian Ana Ivanovic, who Azarenka beat in their last rematch at the Southern California Open in three close sets.
