According to reports by Wrestling Inc., Alberto Del Rio has cut ties with the WWE after having recently returned to the company in October 2015. Their source also indicates that the wrestler submitted his notice 60 days ago through his lawyer.
Del Rio was already “frustrated with the empty promises he was given after being recruited to the company last summer,” said Wrestling Inc., wherein he was assured a main event push. But things did not pan out for the wrestler and the WWE, and he was placed in a forgettable Mex-America angle that did not sit well with fans. Following this, more disappointment met the former WWE champion when he was assigned to be part of the mid card heel faction, the League of Nations.
Rumors of his departure had already been making the rounds in the wrestling world after he, along with real life girlfriend Saraya-Jade Bevis (aka Paige) were suspended for 30 days by the WWE. The suspension was implemented based on the two wrestlers’ apparent violation of the company’s wellness policy which was enacted after the passing of former superstar Eddie Guerrero.
The embattled WWE star has also had some trouble outside of the ring, having faced adultery charges in an ongoing divorce battle. These charges are obviously linked to Bevis, whom Del Rio has been dating (openly) since May 2016.
The couple was also spotted at a Combate Americas MMA event which some saw as a “bargaining tactic” aimed at the WWE. Obviously, the wrestling company did not appreciate the move.
With Del Rio’s apparent departure, he leaves behind a very colorful career, which began with two WWE Championships, two World Heavyweight Championships, a Royal Rumble, and a Money in the Bank match. In 2014 he was fired after an incident with an office employee who made a racist remark. The wrestler made a comeback bid in 2015, winning over John Cena for the US championship, but immediately plateauing to a mid-tier wrestler.
