WWE Rumors: Kurt Angle, Bill Goldberg return as SmackDown goes live?

The WWE is trying to convince its former stars to make a huge comeback. Rumors are swirling that Kurt Angle, Bill Goldberg and others are being courted to return for the brand split as SmackDown starts airing live on July 19.

WWE CEO and Chairman Vince McMahon are reportedly leading the negotiations that further fuels speculations that Bill Goldberg will be pitted against Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam 2016 in New York. Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio via Wrestling Coverage that among the names recruited by McMahon include Carlito, MVP and Stevie Richards.

“WWE just realized they have to fill two rosters, calling lots of 40+-year-old guys to return to the new era,” Meltzer stated on his Twitter account.

Forbes.com noted that aside from Goldberg, also contacted by McMahon are Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio and current TNA star Jeff Hardy. Aside from the old timers, WWE is also looking at drafting future stars from NXT to join the SmackDown roster. Though no confirmation has been yet as to which events will Goldberg and the other former WWE stars will perform, but McMahon wants to bolster the campaign with SmackDown first and from there would build the story line for marketing the brand.

Goldberg was rumored to face Brock Lesnar either in the upcoming SummerSlam slated on Aug. 20 or at Wrestlemania 33 which will be staged at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida on April 2, 2017. The last time the two great heavyweights fought inside the ring was back at Wrestlemania 32 and the WWE is looking at bolstering SmackDown with his comeback that could be permanent depending on the negotiations of both Goldberg and McMahon.

For Rey Mysterio, Kurt Angle and Jeff Hardy they are all open to the idea of making a WWE return. The brand draft is expected to be on July 11. Many believe that the move is to further hype the matches that will be billed for SummerSlam and for Wrestlemania 33. But it is also rumored to help WWE get its rating on television shares as they hope that airing SmackDown live and with former superstars leading the way, it could help the company generate more viewer’s share and profit.
