WWE Backlash 2016 rumors and updated match card after Aug. 22 edition of SmackDown Live

WWE Backlash 2016 rumors and updated match card after Aug. 22 edition of SmackDown Live

WWE Backlash 2016 will be SmackDown Live’s first brand-exclusive pay-per-view since the brand extension. Here are the latest rumors and updated match card for the event following the August 23 edition of SmackDown.

Backlash is officially coming back to WWE’s yearly PPV lineup after a seven-year absence. It will be SmackDown’s first brand-exclusive event of the “New Era” and it is expected to have a stacked match card.

Dean Ambrose (C) vs. A.J. Styles for the WWE World Championship

Dean Ambrose successfully defended his WWE World Championship against Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam. On the other hand, A.J. Styles defeated John Cena and SmackDown GM Daniel Bryan made him the No. 1 Contender.

Ziggler was given an opportunity to make it a Triple Threat Match but he failed to defeat The Phenomenal One in the main event of SmackDown this week. Ambrose vs. Styles will be the main event of WWE Backlash 2016 and it is going to be an exciting match.

According to Cageside Seats, the WWE has been high on Styles since having two great matches with Roman Reigns. Him going after the WWE World title was already planned ahead since Cena is going on a hiatus.

Becky Lynch vs. Nikki Bella vs. Naomi vs. Alexa Bliss vs. Natalya vs. Carmella in a Six-Pack Challenge for the SmackDown Women’s Championship

Nikki Bella made her return from a neck injury at SummerSlam and she has the chance to become the first ever SmackDown Women’s champion at WWE Backlash 2016. She has to defeat Becky Lynch, Naomi, Alexa Bliss, Natalya and Carmella in a Six-Pack Challenge.

In the recent edition of SmackDown, Carmella turned heel and attacked Nikki before their match and during an interview at Talking Smack. It is very interesting that there are sub-stories being told as the six women get a shot to steal the spotlight at WWE Backlash 2016.

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Tournament Final

SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon and GM Daniel Bryan announced that there will be a tournament to determine the brand’s tag team champions. The Usos and American Alpha already advanced to the semifinals by defeating The Ascension and Breezango, respectively.

Other teams that are going to compete include The Hype Bros, The Vaudevillains, and Heath Slater & Rhyno. There would be one more surprise team to be revealed in next week’s episode of SmackDown Live.

Besides the first three official matches, here are some of the rumored matches to be added in the WWE Backlash 2016 card.

Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt

The fresh feud between Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt kicked off this week on SmackDown. The Eater of Worlds interrupted The Viper during his promo about his match with Brock Lesnar. Expect this match to become official for WWE Backlash 2016 as early as next week.

Baron Corbin vs. Kalisto

Here is another feud that has been brewing for the past several weeks. Baron Corbin is pissed at Kalisto for costing him the No. 1 contender spot for the Intercontinental championship. The Lone Wolf has had the upper hand but this match will be a showcase of two NXT alumni.

The Miz vs. Apollo Crews

The Miz just cut the promo of his life this past Tuesday in the Talking Smack show only at the WWE Network. The IC champ blasted Daniel Bryan and it could lead to the SmackDown GM making The Miz’s life miserable.

WWE Backlash 2016 will be held at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia on September 11. It will be followed by Monday Night Raw’s first brand-exclusive event “Clash of Champion” on September 25, 2016.

Love that picture of Dean! Very intense! I’m really really looking forward to Styles vs Ambrose and I thi they should stretch it out. Have Dean retain at Backlash but have Styles ultimately win the title at Survivor Series at the very least. Since they’re clearly going to put the belt on him eventually.
