WWE Hall of Famer and former WWE champion to donate their brains for CTE research

Two former WWE superstars will be donating their brains for research on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy or CTE. WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley and former WWE champion Jeff Hardy are the latest athletes to join the cause.

In a previous report about CTE Research, Kevin Nash will be donating his brain and spinal cord to former WWE superstar Chris Nowinski and his Concussion Legacy Foundation. The WWE Hall of Famer noted that he had several concussions throughout his career and has experienced short-term memory problems.

Nowinski’s foundation will also be receiving the brain of “The Hardcore Legend” after his death. Foley made the announcement on Twitter when a fan suggested that he should donate his brain to CTE Research.

The 50-year-old wrestler is well-known for his hardcore matches during his career with the most famous one against The Undertaker inside Hell in a Cell back in 1998. Foley, wrestling in his “Mankind” persona, was thrown from the top of 16-foot cell twice during the match.

On the other hand, Hardy told Ring Rust Radio that he will also be donating his brain to CTE research. The former WWE champion said that he was inspired to do it because of Nash and Rob Van Dam, who will also give his brain to Concussion Legacy Foundation.

“It’s a huge serious issue in wrestling. I’ve rung my bells so many times especially back in the day when chair shots to the head were legal. My goodness, I took so many of those. Luckily, I’m only aware of about two or three concussions that I have had but there’s really no way of telling how many overall. When Nash announced he was doing that I was on board and I didn’t know that RVD did as well. That really inspired me to do the same thing,” Hardy said.

CTE is a progressive degenerative brain disease found in athletes with a history of head trauma and concussions. CTE is reported in boxers since the 1920s but has been recently diagnosed in other athletes, most notably with retired football players.
