WWE Payback 2016 updated match card and rumors

The 2016 edition of WWE Payback is about two weeks away and the match card is starting to take shape. After the latest episode of Monday Night Raw, there are now six official matches. Let’s take a look at some of the rumors surrounding WWE Payback 2016 and other potential matches to be added.

As recapped by WWE.com, many fans were pumped to see Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows attack Roman Reigns on this week’s Raw. It is certainly a tease of the Bullet Club finally forming in the WWE and A.J. Styles seems to be leading them if not NXT champion, Finn Balor.

Speaking of NXT, two tag teams has taken over the main roster as the team of Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady will face The Vaudevillains to determine the new number one contenders for The New Day’s tag team titles. Enzo & Cass were victorious against The Dudley Boyz while the team of Aiden English and Simon Gotch got the win over The Usos.

Three other matches were made official by Shane McMahon on Raw including Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn, Deam Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho and Charlotte defending the Women’s title against Natalya. It was also announced by Natalya that WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart will be by her side when he challenges Charlotte.

Official WWE Payback 2016 Match Card as of April 18, 2016

  • Roman Reigns vs. A.J. Styles for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
  • Charlotte (w/ Ric Flair) vs. Natalya (w/ Bret Hart) for the WWE Women’s Championship
  • Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho
  • Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn
  • Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs. The Vaudevillains to determine the No. 1 contender for the WWE Tag Team Championship
  • The Miz vs. Cesaro for the Intercontinental Championship

As mentioned in a previous report, other potential matches on the pay-per-view card include Baron Corbin vs. Dolph Ziggler, Becky Lynch vs. Emma and The Wyatt Family vs. League of Nations.

The Corbin-Ziggler rivalry escalated in this week’s Raw when Ziggler attacked Corbin after his win over Fandango. However, the NXT alum got the best of the former Intercontinental champion by hitting a big boot followed up by the End of Days finisher on the floor.

Another rivalry that has been rumored is the reinvigorated Emma going up against Becky Lynch. As for the possible six-man tag match between the two stables, it all depends on Bray Wyatt’s calf injury.

WWE Payback 2016 will be held at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois on May 1 only on the WWE Network.
