2016 Rio Olympics: Brazil, USA, Russia and Serbia takes first win in Women’s Volleyball

Powerhouse teams Brazil, USA, Russia and Serbia took their first win in the Women’s Volleyball event of the 2016 Rio Olympics, Saturday at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Defending Olympic Champion Brazil defeated Cameroon in an easy fashion. The Brazilians dominated Cameroon in straight sets with a score of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-12.

Fernanda “Fe Garay” Rodrigues and Natalia Pereira led the Brazilian team with a total score of 12 points and 10 points, respectively.

Cameroon’s lack of experience caused their defeat against the world number one team, Brazil. Laetitia Moma Bassoko the only double figure in the match scored a total score of 13 points, 12 from attacks and a service ace.

Meanwhile, 2012 London Olympics silver medallist USA defeated Puerto Rico in straight sets with a score of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-17.

The Americans showcase their great spikes and superb blocking to dominate Puerto Rico in a 1 hour and 15 minute game in the preliminary round of the Women’s Volleyball event.

Kimberly Hill and Kelly Murphy led the American team with a total score of both 14 points apiece.  On the other side of the Court, Stephanie Enright of Puerto Rico led the team with a total score of 13 points, 9 from attacks, 1 block and 3 service aces.

Russia and Serbia also earned their first win in this event as they defeat Argentina and Italy, respectively.

The Russian Federation dominated Argentina in straight sets with score of 25-13, 25-10 and 25-16 while the Serbian outlast the Italians also in straight sets with a score of 27-25, 25-20 and 25-23.

The games for the Women’s Volleyball tournament will resume on August 8, 2016 featuring the epic battle between China and Italy followed by another exciting game between Japan and Cameroon.
