USA National Men’s volleyball team loses its first game while Brazil, Poland, and Russia win, on the first day of Men’s Volleyball tournament of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Team USA loss to Canada in their opening game to start their Olympic gold medal run in straight sets with the score of 23-25, 17-25, 23-25.
Attack, service and reception errors plagued the USA team in this first game upset. The USA is one of the highly favorite team to enter the Olympic finals but the Canadian volleyball team stunned them despite having more service aces in this Olympic opener.
The efforts of Matt Anderson and Aaron Russell were not enough to win this game, Anderson and Russell scored a total of 15 and 12 points respectively.
Gavin Schmitt and Nicholas Hoag led the Canadian team who scored a total of 13 and 15 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, Brazil defeated Mexico despite of losing the opening set of the match. The Brazilian outlast Mexicans in four sets with the score of 23-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-18 to get their first win in the preliminary round of the tournament.
Wallace De Souza and Ricardo Lucarelli led the Brazilian team who scored a total of 18 points and 17 points respectively.
Italy also won their opening game against France in straight sets with the score of 25-20, 25-20, 25-15. Ivan Zaytev is the leading scorer of Italy who scored a total of 16 points, 14 from attacks and 2 blocks.
Poland and Russia also win their opening game after defeating Egypt and Cuba respectively. The Polish volleyball team dominated the Egyptians in straight sets with the score of 25-18, 25-20, 25-17. On the other hand, Russians defeated the Cubans in four sets with the score of 25-17, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-18.
The USA will face Italy in their next game while Brazil will face Canada. Russia will play against Argentina who also won their opening game against Iran in straight sets with the score of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-18. Iran will be the next opponent of Poland.
