The USA Women’s Beach Volleyball team, Kerri Walsh and April Ross failed to enter the final round of the Women’s Beach Volleyball tournament as they were defeated by Brazil in the semifinal round of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The American pair failed to survive the brilliant attacks, superb blocking and strong service of the Brazilian pair, Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas. Brazil defeated USA in straight sets by the score of 22-20 and 21-18 to grab a ticket to the final round of the tournament.
Walsh and Ross’ faulty errors, especially in service and service reception plagued them in the match. They committed 4 service faults and 7 errors as compared to Brazil’s 2 service faults and 7 errors. They also allowed the Brazilians to make 42 attacks, 3 blocks, and 5 service aces as compared to their 39 attacks, 2 blocks and 1 service ace.
This is a heartbreaking result for Ross and Walsh. It has to be noted that Walsh won the gold medal at the London 2012 Games with partner May-Treanor while Ross and partner Jennifer Kessy took the silver.
Meanwhile, the pair from Germany, Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst defeated the other Brazilian pair, Talita Rocha and Larissa Franca by a score of 21-18 and 21-12 to advance to the gold medal match.
Ludwig and Walkenhorst dominated Rocha and Franca through their superb blocking and strong service. They got 5 blocks and 4 service aces as compared to 0 blocks and 2 service aces of Brazil. This is the first time Ludwig and Walkenhorst has reached the final round of an Olympics.
April Ross and Kerri Walsh of USA will now face Talita Rocha and Larissa Franca for the bronze medal while it will be Germany vs. Brazil for the gold.
