The USA Women’s volleyball team survived the very dangerous and scrappy Netherlands team to take its second win in the preliminary round of the Women’s Volleyball tournament in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The American volleyball team defeated the Dutch team in five thrilling sets with the score of 18-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20 and 15-8.
USA’s setter Alisha Glass led the team by using her smart setting skills to orchestrate the USA’s offense. She has 52 excellent sets throughout the match. Meanwhile, Kelly Murphy and Kimberly Hill led the USA’s offense who scored 18 points and 14 points apiece.
On the other side of the court, the ever reliable opposite spiker, Lonneke Sloetjes led the Netherlands team who scored a total of 21 points, 20 from spikes and a block.
Unfortunate events happened during the match, Netherlands team captain, Maret Balkestein injured in the match. The medical team is still finding out what injury Balkestein had but based on her facial reaction when she carried out in the court it looks a little bit serious.
Meanwhile, in the other matches on the day, defending champion Brazil defeated Argentina in straight sets by the score of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-11. Veteran opposite spiker Sheila Castro was the leading scorer for Brazil who scored a total of 14 points, 13 from spikes and 1 service ace.
The Russian Federation also earned their second straight win after dominating South Korea in four exciting sets with the score of 25-23, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-14. Russia used their height against South Korea who scored a total of 14 successful blocks versus the only 6 blocks of the Koreans.
The Undefeated USA in Pool B will face the undefeated also Serbian team who also wins against Puerto Rico in straight sets.
Brazil will go up against Japan in Pool A while Russia will face Cameroon for their third game in the preliminary round of 2016 Rio Olympics.
