France thrashed Italy in the men’s team epee final at the 2016 Rio Olympic fencing event to bounce back from the event they lost four years ago in London.

France’s dominating run was underscored by the fact that the French squad did not lose a round in the final with a final score of 41-35. The win gave France the record ninth gold medal for a country in the men’s epee competition.

Doing it against Italy, a bitter rival in sports, also made the first place finish more special. France was shut out from gaining any medals at the 2012 London Olympics.

“We know that with our medal, no one can take that away from us, same as in (London), no one can take that away from us,” France’s coach Hugues Obry stated about recovering from London to Rio.

Italy featured top fencers Marco Fichera, Paolo Pizzo and Enrico Garozzo while the French team included elite fencers in Daniel Jerent, Yannick Borel and Jean Michael Lucenay.
