In their Olympic opener against Croatia, the Spaniards lose a close game 72-70 when Dario Saric blocked Pau Gasol’s shot to tie the game. It was a shocking upset as the second-ranked team in the world showed that their age might be catching up to them.
Spain led for the majority of the game before the Croatians rally in the fourth quarter to win the game. Pau Gasol scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Nikola Mirotic added 19 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Veterans Rudy Fernandez and Jose Calderon were held scoreless as they look to get it going against Brazil. On the other hand, the host nation also failed to win their opening game against Lithuania. The Brazil Men’s National Basketball Team came up short in their comeback as Lithuania won the game 82-76.
The hosts were down 58-29 at the half but a furious rally led by Leandro Barbosa cut the lead to four, 75-71, with two minutes left. However, Domantas Sabonis put the finishing touches in the final minute to seal the win.
The Spaniards are the favorites to win this game against the Brazilians. The 2012 Silver Medal winners want to prove that they still have one last run in them and it comes at the expense of the hosts.
