Two days after falling in their opening day at the 2016 Rio Olympics, the Spain basketball national team tumbled again in an upset defeat to hosts Brazil, 66-65. The hosts got their first win in the tournament thanks to a tip-in from Marcus Marquinhos with five seconds to go in the game.
Spain lost to Croatia, 72-70 in their first game and is now in danger of not making the next round after falling to 0-2 in the group stages. Spain had a chance to retake the lead and victory but Sergio Lull missed as the buzzer expired.
Marquinhos, the savior for Brazil, had 10 points while Huertas top-scored for his country with 11 points plus 4 rebounds and 7 assists. Alex Garcia and Augusto Lima added 9 points each for Brazil.
Brazil was in control early in the fourth quarter with an 11-point lead but Spain stormed back to grab a 64-63 lead with two minutes to go in the game.
After two missed free throws from Spanish star Pau Gasol, Marcelo Huertas missed a jumper but Marquinhos tapped the game-winner for Brazil’s first win. Gasol, who signed with the San Antonio Spurs in the 2016 free agency, went 5-of-13 from the free throw line and had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
