Rafael Nadal of Spain lost to Kei Nishikori of Japan in the bronze medal match of the men’s singles tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympics in three sets, 6-2 6-7 (1) 6-3.

The Japanese’s victory is controversial though as some accused Nishikori of cheating and abusing a break in the match. Nishikori had a lengthy 10-minute break during the match and eventually won against Nadal.

The Japanese allegedly used the break to regain his energy or cut the momentum from Nadal.

One media outfit from Spain claimed that Nadal was not happy with the tactics of the Japanese, who won his country its first medal in tennis since 1920 or after 96 years.

One tweet asked, “Kei Nishikori supposedly took a shower after Rafa took the 2nd set. I didnt even know that was allowed?”

Conchita Martinez, Nadal’s compatriot also shared her thoughts on Twitter and stated, “I find it amazing how long it took from the bathroom Nishikori has had time to showering!” and accused Nishikori of abusing the break.

“I’m very happy to win, to get a medal today, even though [it’s] third place. It means a lot for me to especially beat Rafa today,” Nishikori said in the press conference.

“I knew before playing Olympics that if I can play good tennis, good, solid tennis, I have a chance to get a medal. I was playing for my country. This is something different from other tour.”
