The road to Gennady Golovkin has been a protracted one for the current WBO light middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, boxing news reveals.
Instead of fulfilling this supposed objective earlier this year, Canelo Alvarez chose to vacate his title and fought Liam Smith instead, at 154 pounds.
According to a report by ESPN for boxing news, Canelo Alvarez has been installed as the mandatory challenger for Billy Joe Saunders. If both Canelo and GGG win their intervening fights, they would ultimately be set up for a showdown on September 2017.
Alvarez was chosen over Avtandil Khurtsidze, who has ten days to make an appeal. In coming up with the decision favoring Canelo Alvarez, the organization stated his popularity as “a boxing fan’s idol” and a “crowd favorite.”
“He is the top pay-per-view fighter on HBO, [and] his presence has given that category a renewed interest in boxing. At this moment, [he] will give boxing the maximum required exposure,” the report said.
Canelo Alvarez vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Alvarez’ team has not made any decision on the matter as of this time. They pointed out that they are weighing other options as well. Boxing news says one that stands out is a possible all-Mexican showdown against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. beat Dominik Britsch earlier this month, but both parties are now pegged at coming up with a catch weight agreement. It is likely to be stipulated at 165 pounds.
“We’ll make a decision after the holidays. It’s looking more and more like we’re going to wait for Canelo’s next fight until May. We don’t want to take any chances with his hand. You have to be careful. We want to make sure it’s 100 percent. The doctor hasn’t given him clearance yet. He’ll go see the doctor after Christmas,” Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions said.
Canelo Alvarez favored over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Canelo may be the smaller fighter, but he has the speed. This could be a deciding factor, although Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. could time him as well.
“I think that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. looked physically well in his last fight. His body looked good, but heavy. Canelo could get in there with him but there would be a significant weight difference, and I don’t know if they will reach an agreement because in that aspect they have protected Canelo from facing bigger men.” Hall of Fame trainer Nacho Beristain said in a report by BoxingScene.
“The fight is going to be a success. Defensively Julio is not that good and takes a lot of punches and throws very few combinations, and there is not much variety to his punches. Canelo has speed, counter-punches well. Me personally, I would like to see that fight.”
