Fights against smaller fighters with big names are becoming more of a trend nowadays. It’s diluting a tough sport that’s already weakened with too many belts for one too many paper champions. Manny Pacquiao vs Gennady Golovkin talks started as a joke, yet we can’t even filter it as one.
That’s how much the fight game has deteriorated in time.
Since Bob Arum jokingly said he’d be willing to pit Manny Pacquiao vs Gennady Golovkin next fight if he impresses versus Vargas, it took turns in boxing news and has now returned as a semi-counter offer. GGG is willing to fight the Pac-Man at 154 lbs.
With the Mayweather fight deemed as a bore, and Manny Pacquiao vs Vargas not drawing enough attention, who knows if what the fight world needs is a bit of a travesty to awaken itself?
Will Manny Pacquiao KO Vargas who vows to press the action?
For a Gennady Golovkin next fight, he refused to fight Canelo Alvarez below 160 lbs, but he’d be willing to fight Manny Pacquiao at 154, Abel Sanchez said for boxing news.
“If Arum is honestly talking about that and it’s something that can be done and Manny is agreeing to that and Gennady Golovkin ‘s people agree to that… who knows?” Sanchez said in a report by BoxingScene.
GGG wouldn’t go down in weight for Alvarez, but boxing news revealed he would for Floyd Mayweather, another natural welterweight fighter.
“I think Manny Pacquiao would deserve GGG going to 154 too, not because we’re greater than him. Manny deserves that because the history of… he’s great. He’s a Hall of Famer and you bow down to that and do what’s necessary. I don’t think less than 154 is possible, but 154 is a weight that could be done. There is no way that would I suggest getting him any lower than that.” Abel Sanchez added.
If this match up happens, considering their size and natural weight disparity, it’s surely attract the attention the sports hunger for, albeit in a sorry light. It’d be a burlesque representation of the great sport we once knew and have grown to love.
But Gennady Golovkin ‘s team attempts to show concern for Manny Pacquiao ‘s speed as a categorical concern.
“I’d be worried about speed, as you saw with Kell Brook. I’ve always said that when a lighter fighter moves up, the bigger fighter is not used to seeing that speed. Until he assimilates the speed and gets used to the speed, you will get hit. And Manny is even faster than Brook and even sharper than Brook.”
And we all know what happened to Kell Brook.
