Manny Pacquiao is set to return to boxing this November 2016 against Jessie Vargas but he has two more fights in 2017, confirms Bob Arum. The Top Rank president also added that a rematch with Floyd Mayweather is possible.
Pacquiao (58-6-2, 38 knockouts) announced his retirement from boxing earlier in 2016 after his fight against Timothy Bradley of the United States of America (USA). He ran for senatorial elections in his country, Philippines, in May and announced he’s fighting again earlier this month.
Pacquiao will be fighting Vargas on November 5, 2016 for the World Boxing Council title for the welterweight division.
“If he wins this fight, we have the idea for a couple of big fights next year. And I think that will end his career with two more fights in 2017,” Bob Arum stated to inquirer.net regarding Pacquiao’s plans in the coming years.
The Top Rank president also mentioned that there is a chance that Pacquiao’s fight in 2017 could be against Floyd Mayweather. The American was victorious in the duo’s previous encounter, termed “Fight of the Century” on May 2, 2015.
Pacquiao’s return to boxing is being condemned by the fans in his country because he is already an elected senator. Pacquiao promised that he wants to focus on his political career and serve the country when he retired earlier in 2016.
Vargas (27-1-0, 10 knockouts) is from Nevada in Las Vegas, USA. He is not one of the top boxers in the division and even lost to Pacquiao’s rival, Bradley in a 2015 fight. Vargas is also not a knockout artist with only 10 knockouts in his 38 career fights.
Manny Pacquiao versus Jessie Vargas is seen by many boxing fans as another gimmick from the sport. Pacquiao’s comeback is also just another way for the Filipino senator to earn money though he already earned a lot in his fight against Mayweather.
“Let’s see Manny with a fully-healed shoulder. I think Manny would give a lot better account of himself in that fight. I thought it was a very close fight. I thought Manny could have won that fight. When they fight again, if they fight again, I have no doubt that Manny will win,” Arum stated.
