Boxing rivals Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather retired from the sport in recently. Pacquiao has announced a comeback fight in November and Mayweather is expected to do the same.
A boxing expert suggests that a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao rematch needs to happen put some relevance into boxing especially among mainstream fans of the fight sport.
“But, now, with both fighters retired, there’s a real need to inject a healthy dose of star power into a struggling sport by revisiting the mega-fight. Boxing needs the spotlight and the mainstream attention if it wants to stop its slow collapse into irrelevance,” Dennis Cruz of the Boxing Tribune wrote.
“Mayweather-Pacquiao II will help the sport get back into a position where it can start building for the future.”
Pacquiao has been confirmed to be facing Jessie Vargas in November 2016. The move has been criticized by boxing fans because Pacquiao is an elected government official in the Philippines. Pacquiao also promised that he will retire from boxing but is returning to the sport despite the promises.
“All across the board, boxing needs another attention grabber and, despite the bad reviews for the first one, there’s still enough fan interest to book the fight. Even a Mayweather-Pacquiao that is half as successful as the first would be more lucrative than any other bout currently available to either boxer,” Cruz stated.
This is where Cruz is wrong because it’s not clear if the same Pacquiao and Mayweather fans will still support the second fight between the two. Many boxing fans felt cheated in the first one because of the way they performed. Many called it boring and that the pay-per-view amount was too expensive for the quality of boxing they watched.
A Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather rematch could prove to be a fluke if it happens in the future.
