Undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is willing to come out of retirement for only one fighter – UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. Though both of them verbally agreed to fight, only rumors about the date and venue of the bout are currently circulating.
UFC president Dana White revealed that the official negotiation between both camps is expected to take place in the coming weeks. The UFC will also be part of the negotiations since “The Notorious” is still under contract with the promotion. In an appearance on Wednesday’s edition of The Herd, White plans to talk with McGregor this week before he starts negotiating with Mayweather.
“I think we get the McGregor side in the next couple of days,” White said on The Herd. “And then I go lock myself in a room for a couple days with Team Mayweather and see what we can come out with.”
Dana White: Mayweather – $100 million, McGregor – $75 million
White doesn’t intend to directly negotiate with the five-division world champion. He plans to talk about the deal with Mayweather’s partner Al Haymon. As most people expect, the superfight will be boxing match under boxing rules with boxing officials.
Money is expected to be the main priority of the fight as both Mayweather and McGregor expect to have a huge payday. White gave his projected purse amount for both fighters.
“It depends on how much the fight sells,” White said. “And if the fight sells as well as I think it can, Floyd makes a little north of $100 (million) and Conor makes $75 (million). He (Mayweather) feels like he’s the A-side and he should get more of it. We haven’t really gotten into that negotiation yet. I wanted to get McGregor locked in first because McGregor is under contract with me. And at the end of the day, does this fight make a ton of sense for me? It really doesn’t. But Conor wants this thing really bad and I’ve said it many times, the kid’s stepped up and saved some big fights for me, man, so I’m in. I’ll figure it out.”
Conor McGregor needs to defend UFC belt after Mayweather fight
Conor McGregor set his upcoming fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. as his main priority rather than defending his lightweight belt. Since he became a UFC champion, “The Notorious” has not defended any belt. After fighting Mayweather, the UFC will surely push him to make his first title defense or force him to vacate his belt for the second time.
