The hottest boxing rumor lately has been the proposed fight between former top boxer Floyd Mayweather and current mixed martial arts (MMA) star Conor McGregor. Recently, a boxing analyst claims that if Mayweather vs. McGregor does happen this year, fight fans can expect this to be the last for McGregor’s career.
According to analyst Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, McGregor getting Mayweather next means his career is over in Dana White’s UFC. That’s because, as Iole claims, McGregor will “price (himself) out for any future UFC fight.
Rumors state that Mayweather is willing to give McGregor a guaranteed $15M for the fight. The retired American boxer added that he wants his own guaranteed $100M. Then they can share the pay-per-view sales for the fight. Meanwhile, White, the chief of the UFC said that he is willing to guarantee both $25M each.
MMA is cheaper than boxing, McGregor forced to retire
All the numbers being stated are comparatively higher than what McGregor has earned in past UFC fights. He is the biggest star in MMA. And the highest paid but he got only about $3M in guarantee in his previous fight against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.
McGregor switching to boxing to fight Mayweather will give the Irish MMA star an amount he can never get in the mixed martial arts world. MMA is just not as popular as boxing even with its crossover to the mainstream fans and media. Boxing is still the richer sport than MMA as seen in the pay-per-view buys and guaranteed fight purses by Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in their “Fight of the Century” in 2015.
If McGregor does not agree to fight Mayweather, the potential contenders are Khabib Nurmagomedov, Tony Ferguson, Tyron Woodley, Nate Diaz, Jose Aldo and Georges St. Pierre, according to Iole. But all of those fights won’t net McGregor near what Mayweather is offering.
