Floyd Mayweather (49-0) not only retired at the top of the sport of boxing, but he ended his career way ahead of the pack, that he says it’s not even close.
When Floyd Mayweather finally faced his arch rival Manny Pacquiao, the only fighter for a time, many believed would truly give him a run for his money, it wasn’t even exciting as originally proposed. But of course, there could be a valid excuse on that shoulder injury “Pacman” sustained at the Fight of the Century.
Yet again, they all practically had excuses to give, en route to Floyd Mayweather ‘s glittery path to an undefeated record.
According to a report by Boxing News 24, Floyd Mayweather said, “I never knew how good I was. I never reached my peak. I never had to beat a fighter with my A-game. I beat every fighter in boxing with a D & C game.”
“I never even had to go to a ‘B.’ When I took it to C+, that was against Diego Corrales. With Ricky Hatton, I used the D-game to beat him. I never had to really dig into my bag of tricks to bring the best Floyd Mayweather. I didn’t have to bring my best out for Canelo. He’s a hell of a fighter. He’s a future Hall of Famer.”
Is this why rumors go that a Floyd Mayweather next fight with Gennady Golovkin (36-0) is in the works? That he would unretire to test himself for once against GGG?
A report by Forbes highly suggests Floyd is trying to challenge GGG, albeit indirectly, through criticism. He mentions how the smaller fighter Kell Brook exposed Gennady Golovkin when they fought.
“A guy like [Brook] with decent boxing skills exposed him.”
Floyd’s nephew is a fan of GGG but believes he could beat him, saying, “Unc, you would have stopped him, you would’ve destroyed him.” To which the former Pound 4 Pound champ rejoined, “nephew you ain’t telling me nothing new”.
Are we witnessing a potential Gennady Golovkin as a Floyd Mayweather next fight? Surely, the things Floyd said don’t sound like something coming from a retired fighter.
On GGG, “Money May” came down more accurately and said, “He’s a guy that’s straight up and down. Really no special effects. He’s got good punching power, but no special effects … You guys already would know what would have happened if it was me [fighting Golovkin].”
Did Floyd Mayweather just unofficially retire?
