Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is currently making a revised plan for champion Manny Pacquiao after the canceled bout against Amir Khan in the United Arab of Emirates. Arum opens up the possibility that Adrien Broner will be Pacquiao’s next opponent.
After being elected as a senator in the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao decided to come out of retirement and fight again in the boxing ring. He expressed his intention to have a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. but “Money” showed no interest in giving him a second bout. Since ending his brief retirement, Pacquiao has been linked to several boxers as his next opponent.
Bob Arum says Amir Khan won’t be Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent
In February, both Amir Khan and Manny Pacquiao announced that they will fight each other in the United Arab of Emirates. Unfortunately, the supposed superfight was canceled after a reportedly “fake” $38 million offer that Pacquiao and his adviser Michael Koncz believed was real. Arum revealed that the offer was nothing but a fantasy.
“Michael is on his way back to meet with Manny but it’s kaddish for the UAE deal. It’s dead,” Arum said to ESPN. “I’m talking to him about another proposal for another fight, not Khan. Khan won’t be Manny’s next opponent.”
Before the Pacquiao-Khan fight was announced, Arum originally wanted “Pacman” to fight in Australia against former Olympian Jeff Horn. They tried to revive negotiations with Horn’s camp but nothing has materialized until now. According to Los Angeles Times, Arum plans to schedule a fight for Pacquiao in July and November.
They consider Terence Crawford, Amir Khan, and Adrien Broner as Pacquiao’s next opponent. However, Crawford will defend his WBO and World Boxing Council belts against Felix Diaz on May 20. Khan wouldn’t be available for July date because of religious commitments, giving Broner the chance to fight Pacquiao.
Amir Khan remains optimistic about “dream fight” with Manny Pacquiao
Amir Khan admitted that he dreams of fighting Manny Pacquiao. Despite the cancellation of their bout, Khan is still hoping that the fight will happen in UAE.
“Pacquiao is the biggest name in boxing, and I’m in the same 147 division, so it makes sense. People are saying the money in Dubai isn’t there and that’s why the fight is off. But the money is there. My team have(sic.) seen the proof of that. I think the fight could happen — I really believe there’s still a chance,” Khan said.
