Top rank promoter Bob Arum wanted Manny Pacquiao to fight unknown Jeff Horn in Brisbane, Australia. But the Filipino wanted the Manny Pacquiao vs. Amir Khan fight in United Arab Emirates. However, the latter fight is now “dead” according to the top rank promoter.
There was supposed to be a Pacquiao vs. Khan fight worth $38M if the fight was held in UAE. But, Arum exposed the fight as a fraud saying the planned UAE bout was just a fantasy.
Pacquiao searching for next fight again
“Michael [Koncz] is on his way back to meet with Manny but it’s kaddish for the UAE deal. It’s dead. I’m talking to him about another proposal for another fight, not Khan. Khan won’t be Manny’s next opponent,” Arum stated to ESPN.
Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s manager, already confirmed the fight in various reports. Pacquiao even had a poll on which fighter the fans want him to fight next and Khan was the runaway winner in the voting. But as confirmed by Arum, who was initially doubtful about the money, the Pacquiao vs. Khan fight is now “dead.”
Bob Arum’s revelation could bring the fight back to Australia. Jeff Horn’s camp reportedly can produce the money to make it happen in their own backyard but it’s reportedly lower than the $38 million rumored in the Pacquiao vs. Khan bout.
Manny Pacquiao vs. Amir Khan was just a fantasy
Arum also stated that Pacquiao vs. Khan is still possible assuming that the organizers can produce the money. The veteran promoter said that the bout between the former sparring partners could still happen in November later this year.
“UAE would not happen until November, if it happens at all, but I doubt it will,” Arum said, noting that doing the fight in late June or July, after the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which was proposed, was also not possible because it would have taken place at an outdoor stadium and it would be far too hot in the desert during the summer,” Arum added in the same article.
A Pacquiao vs. Horn fight in Australia will be interesting for the Australian-based boxing fans. It’s expected to sell since Horn will have his supporters there. Pacquiao is not the same fighter as before and he has not drawn the big pay-per-view numbers ever since his retirement from boxing. Pacquiao was accused of lying about retiring since he returned to box against Jessie Vargas in November 2016.
