UFC president Dana White doesn’t think the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor will be happening soon. Many are also claiming that the potential crossover bout is nothing more than a money grab from both fighters, who has hyped the match in recent months.
The outspoken head of the mixed martial arts (MMA) organization said the Mayweather vs. McGregor superfight is “nowhere near being done” and that “there is no target date whatsoever.”
Other analysts called the superfight as just another “novelty act”, notes Boxing Insider. Current MMA fighters like Jose Aldo also called out McGregor, saying he has no chance against Mayweather.
All hype for Mayweather vs. McGregor?
There are UFC rumors that the Mayweather vs. McGregor superfight already has a date with June 10 being the speculated date. However, White stated that both parties are far apart from any deal being finalized, as being reported by TMZ Sports.
The Mayweather vs. McGregor superfight got a boost when the American boxer announced he is “unretiring” and returning to boxing to face McGregor. He challenged McGregor to sign the contract already so they could fight later this year.
If the hyped bout is finalized, this could rival the pay-per-view and attendance sales of the superfight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in May 2015. There are boxing rumors that the fight will bomb in the PPV and gate attendance because it’s a one-sided fight in favor of Mayweather.
Three days ago, Mayweather confirmed his plans for a boxing comeback. And his return will be against the MMA star Conor McGregor.
“I don’t want to hear no more excuses about the money, about the UFC. Sign the paper with the UFC so you can fight me in June. Simple and plain, let’s fight in June,” Mayweather stated via Fight Hype.
“You’re the B side. I’m the A side. We’re not here to cry about money. I’m tired of all this crying about money and saying you want to fight. You’re blowing smoke up everyone’s ass, if you want to fight, sign the paperwork.”
Mayweather favored in ‘superfight’ vs. McGregor
Many boxing and MMA analysts believe that Mayweather will dominate McGregor since they will fight using boxing rules and regulations. McGregor is known for his striking skills in the Octagon so he might be competitive against the undefeated Mayweather.
The American fighter is considered one of the best defensive fighters in the history of boxing. Many are saying that McGregor will struggle to penetrate Mayweather’s impressive defense. Mayweather has a record of 49 wins with no losses and 26 knockouts before he retired in 2015. Meanwhile, McGregor has a 21-3-0 record with 18 knockout/technical knockout wins and one via submission.
