By now we may already have forgotten about those days when Nonito Donaire jumped ship from Top Rank to join Golden Boy. Of course, that decision was retracted after Bob Arum threatened to file a case against him for breach of contract.
But that was the kind of athlete Nonito Donaire was. He did that because he wanted not only more fights, but to fight the best the competition had to offer. But that was years ago, and much has changed.
According to a report by BoxingJunkie when Nonito Donaire lost to Guillermo Rigondeaux he fought with one step outside the ring, with his mind into retirement.
“We talked about it over and over, and he said, ‘well, it’s a payday,’ and it was his biggest payday,” Cameron Duncan, Donaire’s manager said. “But he didn’t train at all for that fight.”
But prior to fighting Bedak in the Philippines he was already talking about a rematch with Guillermo Rigondeaux, and he was up to challenge even Vasyl Lomachenko.
Are we seeing the renewed Nonito Donaire vs Magdaleno?
“In the past I’ve always been a beast in there. Either you kill me or I’ll kill you. Then, as I conquered the world in my division, as a fighter, I still have that beast identity but I no longer have the status. But because I didn’t have that identity and status in equal parts, it didn’t match, therefore I had to figure it out. And the moment I figured out is now.” Nonito Donaire said.
Will Guillermo Rigondeaux be up for a Nonito Donaire next fight? Will Vasyl Lomachenko be too much for him?
Duncan believes his fighter still has some fight in him. If he retires after Guillermo Rigondeaux or Vasyl Lomachenko he’d be happy for him.
“I don’t care of it’s Vasyl Lomachenko after this, (if it) got him a million and a half( paycheck), something like that.”
Eyes are on Nonito Donaire next fight vs Jessie Vargas, who declared to rip his head off.
“I am a warrior! … I am limitless! … I claim victory!” Nonito Donaire shouted passionately, according to a report by the ReviewJournal.
This is the new Nonito Donaire. He is wiser, more patient, with limpid eyes that only see through a scarred veteran’s sagacious mind.
