In spite of being quite a talented boxer, former Olympic champion and WBA featherweight world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (25-1) has not fought for over a year. Prior to talks with Vasyl Lomachenko, he was scheduled to fight Malcolm Klassen, but things fell apart.
Yuriorkis Gamboa failed to make weight in what was supposed to be his latest outing. He’s had weight issues before, including being linked to Performance Enhancing Drugs through the Biogenesis scandal.
Gamboa’s only loss came from American Terence Crawford on June 2014, back when Vasyl Lomachenko was rebounding from a loss against Orlando Salido (43-13-4-1 NC).
Yuriorkis Gamboa & Vasyl Lomachenko common opponent
Gamboa fought Orlando Salido back in 2011 to unify the WBA and IBF featherweight championship. It was an entertaining match as Orlando Salido and Gamboa exchanged blows, knocking each other down in the contest.
Meanwhile, Orlando Salido remains the only dent to Vasyl Lomachenko ‘s otherwise flawless record of 7-1. It was a controversial match where many experts chimed in and sided with the Ukranian.
A rematch between Vasyl Lomachenko and Orlando Salido is in the works. According to a report by the LA Times, “Salido’s manager, Sean Gibbons, has presented a purse offer to Lomachenko’s promoter, Bob Arum, to earn in excess of $500,000, but Arum hasn’t responded yet.”
“And HBO, which would likely televise the bout, hasn’t signed off on the rematch of Salido’s March 2014 victory over the former two-time Olympic champion who now stands as World Boxing Organization super-featherweight champion.”
The Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Vasyl Lomachenko alternative
While awaiting approval for the Orlando Salido rematch, there are reports pointing out to a Yuriorkis Gamboa match up for Lomachenko instead. It’s a fight between two ultra-talented, former Olympians that would surely spike interest in the boxing community.
Bob Arum, Lomachenko’s promoter told BoxingScene that this bout is possible for 2017, but the Salido rematch remains a priority.
“That’s the first thing we’re talking about,” Bob Arum said regarding Orlando Salido vs Vasyl Lomachenko.
“Also, there’s a possibility of him fighting Yuriorkis Gamboa. That would be an interesting fight. Those are the two main possibilities.”
“Lomachenko was at my house in Beverly Hills last week and he’s intrigued by a Gamboa fight. Either fight is a good fight.”
