Forget the Centenario, the Jaguar SVR or the Ferrari GTC4. The biggest auto story this year is Chevrolet’s new muscle car, the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.
Chevrolet has just unveiled its new sixth-generation Camaro, the high-performance 2017 Camaro ZL1, at the New York Auto Show. The Camaro ZL1 is the first GM car to offer a ten-speed automatic transmission, which developed in conjunction with rival automaker Ford. This new beats delivers more power than any other factory-built Camaro to date and used cutting-edge aerodynamic and lightweight technologies to make a better driving experience.
The Camaro ZL1 delivers significantly enhanced performance in a more aggressive body and lighter architecture. The ZL1 gets a few aerodynamic upgrades to give the new car a purposeful, super aggressive attitude. It features a lower grill opening for greater air flow, a new open bowtie insignia, an updated hood with a carbon fiber insert and heat extractor, unique rockers, a larger front splitter, wider front fenders, and a wing-style rear spoiler.
Powering this new track monster is a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 LT4 engine with tailored intake and exhaust systems producing 640 horsepower (477kW) and 600 pound-feet of torque (868 Nm). As for the weight, it’s now 200 pounds lighter than its predecessor, thanks to the new vehicle architecture called Alpha platform, which designed to underpin sub-compact, compact and mid-size vehicles.
Inside the beast, you will find a unique Recaro front seat, a suede flat-bottom steering wheel and shift knob, and a Performance Data Recorder.
The Camaro ZL1 also showcases key engineering technology, which includes an updated Magnetic Ride suspension, electronic limited-slip differential, Custom Launch Control and Drive Mode Selector, and an available Performance Traction Management.
Other major upgrades include a Bembo brakes with six-piston monobloc front callipers and massive 15.35-inch two-piece front rotors. In addition, the ZL1 also sports a Unique 20-inch forged aluminium wheels with 285/30ZR20 front and 305/30ZR20 rear Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires, which are exclusively developed for the Camaro for improved grip on the track.
The Camaro ZL1 is currently on display at the New York Auto Show, and will go on sale later this year. Price is expected to start at around $60000.
