It was confirmed Friday that actor, Donald Glover, will play the role of Lando Calrissian in the still-untitled Han Solo movie. Lando was originally played by Billy Dee Williams in the original series’ The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
Glover will play one of Star Wars fan favorites and the head of Cloud City, Lando Calrissian, in the Disney and Lucasfilm 2018 spin-off which will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Calrissian was known to have a close friendship with Han Solo. Alden Ehrenreich was picked to play Solo, an iconic character which was portrayed by Harrison Ford in the original series.
In a statement released by StarWars.com, the studio said that the still-untitled film would show Calrissian long before he became the baron of a floating city in the clouds and a general in the Rebel Alliance.
“This new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld,” Lucasfilm said.
According to RollingStone, the still-untitled Han Solo movie will chronologically take place between the prequel Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and George Lucas’ first Star Wars film, called “A New Hope.”
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” said Lord and Miller in a statement. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
Hollywood Reported claimed that Donald Glover is a favorite in the fan community. According to the report, fans have actually launched a campaign calling for Glover to play as the friendly neighborhood hero, Spider-Man, in the 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, instead of fellow actor Andrew Garfield.
Glover also gained fame this year for his work in the FX series, Atlanta.
