Based on The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy novel by Douglas Adams, the new BBC America series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency tells the familiar story of a duo with opposite personalities looking for adventures and mysteries.
Except that Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett) and his de facto sidekick Todd (Elijah Wood) are complete opposites of Doyle’s Holmes and Watson as the the new BBC America show borders on quirkiness and weird and mostly odd but fun distraction.
The new comedy-crime-drama-fantasy show marks the return of Elijah Wood to the small screens after spending four seasons starring in FX’s Wilfred, which is about a young man who has a unique friendship with a neighbor’s dog.
After Wood took on the role of the hobbit Frodo in the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, it seems the actor has spent his years portraying quirky, weird and offbeat characters. His extensive gallery of characters include a concert pianist terrorized by a sniper in Grand Piano, a technician who erases memories in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and a horrific murderer who scalps his victims in Maniac.
He also did the voice of Mumble, the dance-happy penguin in Happy Feet. His latest character in Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency will be no different as he will play Todd Brotzman, an unlucky hotel bellhop who reluctantly became embroiled into a sci-fi flavored mystery populated by a group of bizarre characters, including Dirk Gently, a fast-talking, eccentric detective who believes the “fundamental interconnectedness of all things.”
According to the LA Times, the upcoming BBC America show begins with Brotzman having a bad day that involves a sick sister, an unpaid rent and opening a locked hotel room at his workplace only to find a crime scene. He then meets detective Gently, who cubs him to be his assistant, and things start getting weirder as the yellow-jacketed Gently tries to prove clues don’t matter as connections do, hence his “holistic” detective agency.
At times, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency feels like a never-ending tease but the show is so strange and unpredictable it seems likely that it will find some sort of a cult audience.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency premieres on BBC America October 22.
