Pacific Rim 2 is now on full swing. ComicBook is reporting that Derek Connoly, the co-writer of the blockbuster hit Jurassic World, has been tapped to work on Pacific Rim script revisions, the sequel to the 2013 Guillermo del Toro science-fiction movie that featured man-made robots called Jaegers battle with giant alien-based Kaiju monsters to the death.
After his last year’s smash hit, Jurassic World, Derek Connolly will be lending his storytelling abilities to Pacific Rim 2, currently dubbed ‘Maelstrom’. The extent of Connolly’s involvement in the new Pacific Rim movie has yet to be revealed to the public.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script for Pacific Rim 2 has already been worked on by Guillermo del Toro, Avengers writer Zak Penn and Promentheus’ maker Jon Spaihts, but plot details for the sequel are still kept under wraps. Though the official plot remains under wraps, del Toro has confirmed the reports that the sequel will take place a few years after the original movie, featuring returning characters, and focusing more won the origin of the alien-based Kaiju monsters.
Reports also said that the new movie could be very different from the original movie. Charlie Hunman and Rinko Kikuchi are expected to return along with Charlie Day and Burn Gorman. Del Toro has also expressed interest in bringing new talents, such as Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams.
A sci-fiction movie that focuses on alien-like creatures called Kaiju and man-made robots called Jaegers, Pacific Rim was a box office hit, earning a whopping $411 million. However, a recent dispute between distributor Universal and production firm Legendary led to the movie getting pulled from the release schedule. The news caused a lot of trouble, fans are getting worried that the sequel would never reach production.
However, director Guillermo del Toro has publicly pushed for a sequel and made some good progress, and tweeted that good news was on the way about for Pacific Rim 2.
Right now, it still unclear if Connolly will do a page-one rewrite of the story or develop certain story ideas. Connolly had some big practice in writing big monster movies and has become a name in the world of monster movie. Some of Connolly’s screen credits include, Safety Not Guaranteed and Jurassic World, which he co-wrote with Jurassic World’s film director Colin Trevorrow.
In addition to the Jurassic World, Connolly also co-wrote Intelligent Life, DreamWorks’ science-fiction movie that has Lupita N’yongo attached to star.
Given his extensive writing portfolio, Connolly seems perfectly suited to big-budget blockbuster sci-fiction movie and could potentially get the Pacific Rim 2 script to a point where the studio feels confident in officially moving forward with production and going for the release date.
Pacific Rim’s director Guillermo del Toro will still be involved in Pacific Rim 2 movie, but whether it will provide a compelling continuation of the story that engages fans remains to be seen.
