It looks like the upcoming season 6 will be the last time fans will be seeing Olivia Pope and ABC’s hit political drama series Scandal as rumors continue to swirl following the latest updates about the show.

With showrunner Shonda Rhimes and her production company Shondaland currently busy prioritizing other TV shows at the moment, rumors have it that the upcoming season will be wrapping up its narrative arc to signal its departure from the small screens.

Apart from the successful TV shows that are currently airing or going to air on ABC that include How To Get Away with Murder, Grey’s Anatomy and The Catch, the studio has tapped Rhimes and Betsy Beers’ Shondaland to create the now airing legal drama titled Notorious with similarities to the existing Scandal series, according to Deadline.

The outlet also reported that apart from the existing five shows and an upcoming period drama show titled Still Star-Crossed, Shondaland is set to produce another untitled legal drama project which will be penned by one of Scandal‘s writers Paul William Davies.

In light of this new information and with Shondaland’s series portfolio growing, it seems the Scandal showrunner’s plate is too full that may result to the show’s cancellation.

Additionally, the episode order of the upcoming season of Scandal is also shortened from 22 to 16 episodes and its time slot has also been changed to give way to the new show Notorious. While all these changes were attributed to lead star’s Kerry Washington’s pregnancy, speculations are rife that these signals the cancellation of the political thriller series.

In a report from iTech Post, it was mentioned that Olivia Pope actor Washington has been causing the delay of the production due to her pregnancy and maternity leave. As the show revolves around the story of its lead star, without her, production simply will be halted.

However, official announcement has not been made by the studio or the persons involve in the rumors. As Scandal will still air its season 6 debut on ABC sometime in 2017, fans will have to tune in to know whether Olivia Pope will be back for another season.
