Barcelona trio Suarez, Messi and Neymar have been immortalized by the Catalan tradition of Caganers.
Suarez famous for his biting incidents with Branislav Ivanovic and Giorgio Chiellini who has been the butt of jokes, memes and virals ever since, has now joined his team-mates in hitting the bum note.
In the build-up to Saturday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid, Suarez, Messi and Neymar have been immortalised by the Catalan tradition by featuring them as traditional ceramic figures with pants down.
Caganers, which means ‘Crappers’ in English, are a centuries-old tradition that sees a defecating figurine added to the traditional Nativity scene.
The tradition has been in existence since the 18th century and is popular in Catalonia and neighbouring areas with Catalan culture Andorra, Valencia and Northern Catalonia, Spain, Portugal and Southern Italy.
The name “El Caganer” literally means “the crapper” or “the shitter”.
The traditional Caganer is usually a young peasant boy, dressed in traditional Catalonian atire, wearing a red barretina cap and smoking a pipe.
The characters are meant to symbolise fertilation, hope and prosperity for the coming year.
But as the tradition spread with time, the famous faces and bottoms of sport stars, politicians, royalty and celebrities have been made available for between €12 and €16.
The main idea behind using a celebrity’s face with his pants down is to serve as a “leveling device to bring the mighty down”, to mark an event and to respond to contemporary social issues.
Celebrating his Ballon d’Or, Cristiano Ronaldo has been made a Catalan figure with his golden ball. Real Madrid line up also includes Wales forward Gareth Bale and defender Sergio Ramos as Catalan figures.
The tradition has also caught UK Prime Minister David Cameron with his pants down.
Celebrities like Woody Allen and rock legend Elton John too have figured in the list.
