Over the past couple of years, The CW brings an annual crossover special between its TV series. Recently, the network aired a massive superhero team-ups between characters from The Flash, Arrow, League of Legends and Supergirl. As it turns out, the network nearly had a different crossover before the first time Barry Allen met Oliver Queen.
The beloved, long-running series Supernatural and Smallville almost had a crossover that could have been pretty amazing. A former Supernatural writer recently gave an interview and talked about his time on the hit CW show. According to Jackson Stewart, this was this one idea that they could never make work.
Supernatural/Smallville Near Crossover
“There was a lot of really cool ideas that some of the writers had,” Stewart said via the Entertainment Weekly. “They had an episode where they really wanted to do a Superman curse that was about every actor who plays Superman who ends up killed. So they find out that Tom Welling from Smallville is next and have to save him. I thought that was one of the funniest ideas.”
Stewart was a former co-writer of the episode “Frontierland” of Supernatural season 6. Supernatural has been one of most meta series ever to hit the airwaves. In one of its episodes, stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki played Dean and Sam in an alternate reality. Everybody thought Dean and Sam were the actors Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki working on a show called Supernatural.
Supernatural Meta Episodes
Another episode shows Supernatural‘s version of God writing a series of novels about the adventures of Dean and Sam. The novels, known as The Winchester Gospel, was featured in the 100th episode of the show. The brothers investigate an incident in an all-girls school which has a play based on the novels.
So, Tom Welling turning up as an actor who played Superman while Smallville was on air wouldn’t be the only weird thing Supernatural has ever done. It would have been pretty epic if the crossover happened between the two CW shows.
While it’s a shame that fans never got a Supernatural/Smallville crossover back in the day, it’s not entirely impossible that they could still get a variation of that episode nowadays. After all, Tom Welling can still pretty much play Superman while Supernatural is still airing in The CW.
