Top 10 Super Bowl Halftime Performances: Where does Beyonce, Coldplay and Bruno Mars rank among the best?

By on

In honor of this year’s Super Bowl 50, we have compiled a list of the top 10 Super Bowl performances over the years.

Now, don’t be shocked, surprised and shocked if you don’t happen to see your favourite artists on the list.

There were of course, many great performances but sadly I had to narrow down to 10 only.

So, here are my top ten Super Bowl, Super Great performances.

10) Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, 2004

Sadly, this performance is remembered for all the wrong reasons. More so because the term ‘wardrobe malfunction’ found a place in English vocabulary all thanks to this one nip-slipping incident.

But if you don’t remember, then let me refresh it for you. For starters, everything was going great. The show, singing and the entire performance was going great guns. Until, Justin Timberlake entered the scene and midway through his performance, accidentally exposed Janet Jackson’s assets.

Immediately, there was a total blackout of lights but not before audience and viewers back home had full view of Ms Jackson’s little Jackson.

However, besides the entire incident, Janet and Justin did put together a top show.

9) Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, 2009

Before starting their performance, the band urged everyone to step away from the guar and “put the chicken fingers down”. They then proceeded to rock Tampa for another 12 minutes. And what a show it was.

The band sang four songs but the biggest hit came, as the Billboard report says when Jersey’s finest slammed into a TV camera with his crotch during 10th Avenue Freeze Out.

8) Madonna, 2012

The Material Girl hitmaker was joined by LMAO, Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., and Cee Lo Green on stage. Dressed as a gladiatorial captain of a cheerleading squad, Madonna opened her performance with the hit song Vogue.

She was then joined by LMFAO for a Party Rock Anthem/Sexy And I Know It. The highlight of the performance came when M.I.A. and Minaj joined her for new single Gimme Your Luvin.

7) Coldplay, Beyonce, Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson, 2016.

Well for starters, Coldplay were given the centre stage. But it was Beyonce’s guest slot infact stole the show. Coldplay performed their famous Viva La Vida, Paradise and recent single Adventure of a Lifetime.

The performance was good but that electricity and thrill was missing. Just then Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson enter the picture with their hit Uptown Funk but sadly it too couldn’t lift up the spirit.

And just then Oueen B enters the scene with her politically charged theme song, Formation that she released just a day before the main Super Bowl event. And from thereon, it was Beyonce all the way.

6) U2, 2002

The band not only gave a brilliant performance but also managed to strike an emotional chord. The band started with their song Beautiful Day but it was their 9/11 tribute in fact that captured and mesmerized the audience.

As they played Where the Streets Have No Name, a scrolling backdrop featured the names of all the victims who died in the 9/11 attacks. Bono then finished the song by opening his jacket to reveal the stars and stripes in its lining.

5) Bruno Mars,2014

Bruno Mars and his band did what was expected of them, give a top-stellar performance. And did they deliver it? Ofcourse they did. Bruno performed Billionaire, Locked Out of Heaven, Treasure, Runaway Baby/ Shout and Just The Way You Are.

He was also joined on stage by Red Hot Chilli Peppers who performed Give It Away.

4) Prince, 2007

Prince is known for his erotically charged performances.

But did he give a top-notch performance?

Yes! The rocker however, left no stone unturned to steal the limelight. Prince played his classics like 1999, Let’s Go Crazy and the classics of others Proud Mary, All Along the Watchtower. But the icing on the cake was Purple Rain.

3) Beyonce, 2013

Won’t say anything. Just watch the video clip and you be the judge. Even Queen B herself couldn’t top her 2016 performance compared to her 2013 stellar performance.

But I will say this- Beyonce rocks.

2) Katy Perry, 2015

Katy Perry stole the show from even Beyonce. Performing her hits like Roar, Teenage Dram, I Kissed A Girl, Perry’s performance was all marked by color and full of life.

She was joined by Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott.

1)Michael Jackson, 1993.

It’s Michael Jackson. So, need I say more?

Just sit back and enjoy MJ’s performance.
