Nico Rosberg is the 2016 Formula One (F1) world champion. The German finished the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at second place behind team-mate and championship rival Lewis Hamilton who won the race.
Rosberg needed a podium finish to claim his first F1 world championship. The 31-year-old kept his cool and was able to achieve his goal, finishing the season five points ahead of his rival, according to Sky Sports.
Hamilton’s actions created a huge controversy in the race. The Englishman disobeyed a series of messages from the Mercedes team. He deliberately backed up Rosberg into the Red Bull of Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. This was a move to engineer a result which would have given the man from Stevenage, United Kingdom his fourth world championship.
“I am losing the world championship, I don’t care if l lose the race” Hamilton said.
It is likely that Hamilton’s actions will have long-lasting repercussions. However, it could also be mitigated by the fact that the Englishman won the Abu Dhabi GP and failed ultimately to stop Rosberg from winning the championship.
“I also want to say congrats to Lewis, you did a great season, a great competitor always and it’s always tough to beat you.” Nico said after the race, as reported by BBC.
"It was unbelievably emotional! He has dreamt of this since being a little boy"

Nico Rosberg: Like father like son
Nico’s father, Keke Rosberg won the F1 driver’s world championship in 1982. The Rosberg’s are the second father and son duo to be crowned world champions in F1 history.
The first was the triumph of Graham and Damn Hill. Similar to the Rosberg’s, the previous incident also took place after a gap of 34 years.
Since 2009, Nico Rosberg is the only driver apart from Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel to win a F1 world championship.
