F1 News: Renault vs. Mercedes on fuel limit scrap; 2018 podium finish targeted by the French firm

Formula 1 (F1) team Renault’s managing director Cyril Abiteboul wants the fuel capacity limit to be abolished as it’s “destroying” the positive messages towards power unit technology. Discussions are ongoing within the F1 community with Mercedes and Renault on opposite poles with their decisions. Renault wants to scrap the limit with Mercedes against the proposal.

The 1.6 liter V6 turbocharged engines are restricted to a fuel-flow rate of 100kg per hour. They are also not allowed to use more than 100kg of fuel per grand Prix. Abiteboul wants the spirit of F1 to be maintained and doesn’t want the sport to turn into an endurance race, which is all about very long distances without any issues.

The 38-year-old also mentioned that during the V8 era teams used to manage fuel as a part of their tactics. However, there was no forced limitation on fuel quantity. Hence, he wants the regulation regarding fuel-saving mode to be removed completely.

Abiteboul stressed on the fact that all the engine manufacturers, including Mercedes, have done an amazing job regarding the reduction of fuel consumption by 30-40 per cents. Hence, with the fuel limit regulation; this fantastic achievement is being neglected.

The Frenchman also believes that Renault won’t be able to challenge for the podiums before 2018, considering the sheer quality of rivals currently presents in F1. It has to be noted that the French firm won back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006, according to
