A seat swap between Red Bull drivers Daniil Kvyat and Max Verstappen as early as the Spanish Grand Prix has been seen as one of the most favorable options left for Red Bull after its disastrous Russian Grand Prix.
Red Bull has worked hard, evaluating what to do next in response to Kvyat’s collision with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel at the opening round of the Russian Grand Prix.
The incident, which also involved two F1 drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel, has cost Red Bull too much trouble in the race as it failed to score any points in the race while rivals Ferrari and Williams F1 finished well. The race has left the team 19 points adrift of Ferrari and just six points ahead of Williams.
This has left Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko furious, scrambling for something. One possible solution that has emerged lately is an immediate seat swap, which involved both drivers Max Verstappen and Daniil Kvyat.
“Braking too late once and hitting another car would be acceptable in front of his home crowd, but this doesn’t apply for the second crash.
It’s a pity because he did not only ruin Vettel’s race and [Daniel] Ricciardo’s race, but also his own race. He had to do an extra stop. It was a day of disaster for Red Bull.”
Marko said in a statement, via the Motorsport. “Let’s cool down a bit. During the week, we will talk about this.”
Red Bull is now in the hot pursuit and well-aware that it cannot lose any more ground in the Constructors’ Championship. But it’s still possible that Red Bull will simply warn Kvyat that he can afford not repeating the Russian incident in the upcoming race if Kvyat wants to keep his seat. If the Russian driver still repeats those costly errors at the Spanish Grand Prix, then Max Verstappen could be brought in to take his seat.
Red Bull are said to be keen in promoting the F1 youngster max Verstappen to the senior team as soon as the Dutch racer continues his impressive performances in the track.
“The reality of the situation is that at the end of this season Red Bull will promote Max Verstappen to the team and the seat he is likely to occupy is Kvyat’s,” Allen said, via the James Allen on F1.
“That was already clear at the start of the season. Sources suggested that decision had been made.”
One possible scenario for this seat swap could be seen Verstappen getting promoted from the Toro Rosso team while Daniil Kvyat moving to Toro Rosso.
For Kvyat, the switch to Toro Rosso could be a big help for him. This could allow him to regain his confidence for a longer period and rebuild his reputation in the F1 race. This would also give Red Bull the time needed to check Verstappen as a new member of its senior team.
