Red Bull will need Max Verstappen to beat Mercedes

Gerhard Berger, a former F1 driver and a member of Toro Rosso management, believes that Red Bull’s promotion of the former Toro Rosso driver, Max Verstappen, will give them a better chance of beating the dominant F1 team, Mercedes.

Red Bull has made some progress in the past couple of months and has even eclipsed Ferrari as Mercedes’ closest rival. In three of the last four races, Red Bull has been much closer to Mercedes’ pace than Ferrari.

Berger insisted that Red Bull needs the best possible line-up to get a better chance of beating the dominant Mercedes duo. The former Scuderia Toro Rosso owner believes that a Verstappen-Ricciardo combination would be a good match for the dominant Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

“That’s why Red Bull reacted very strongly with Max Verstappen, they said ‘we have Ricciardo, somebody able to compete, but we need another one because they have Nico and Lewis, “ Berger said in a statement, via the Motorsport.com.

Berger also added that the RB12 is still the best chassis in the F1 track and has proved to be a clear advantage for Red Bull. Finally, Berger made a claim that Verstappen has a potential to become an F1 champion, and that Red Bull need to stick on this one. The 18-years-old Belgian has already proved himself on the track when he won the Spanish Grand Prix.

Gerhard Berger is a former Formula One racing driver and has competed in Formula One for 14 seasons, twice finishing 3rd overall in the championship, both times driving for Ferrari. Berger was also a race winner with Ferrari and McLaren, where he has contributed to McLaren’s 1990 and 1991 constructors titles.

In addition to his racing experience, Berger was also appointed as President of the FIA Single Seat Commission in 2012.
