The Phoenix Suns have an “open competition” for their starting guard spots with the presence of Eric Bledsoe, Devin Booker and Brandon Knight, admitted Suns general manager Ryan McDonough. Phoenix is in rebuilding mode and there will be rumors and speculations regarding trades involving of the three backcourt players during the upcoming NBA season.
“It is going to be an open competition going up to training camp, we haven’t predetermined anything,” McDonough said to the Suns blog at NBA.com.
“We have at least three starting-caliber guards, I think maybe more than that potentially, but three guards who have received All-Star consideration or will receive All-Star consideration in the future — we view that as a good problem to have.”
The three starting-caliber guards are the 26-year-old Bledsoe, 24-year-old Knight and 19-year-old Booker. Knight and Bledsoe are combo guards while Booker is a shooting guard, who is being groomed to be the next star in Phoenix.
To make room for Booker’s development, it makes sense for the Suns to ship one of Bledsoe or Knight if they can get a younger prospect and future draft picks.
One likely trade partner for the Suns are the Boston Celtics, a team which is involved in many NBA rumors because they have the young prospects and picks to give up if they want to improve their chances in the Eastern Conference.
Suns head coach Earl Watson is anticipating no trade immediately this season and he’d like to see one of their quality guards become a top off-the-bench player.
“We understand that whoever comes off the bench has a chance to win Sixth Man of the Year. We have to embrace that, uplift that and empower that.”Watson said in the same article.
However, if the Suns see it as a better option, they can make a deal with the Celtics.
Via ESPN’s Trade Checker, an Eric Bledsoe, Tyson Chandler for Boston’s Amir Johnson, Jaylen Brown and Avery Bradley works under the league rules.
This trade makes sense for the Suns since they will get a starting small forward in Brown and still have depth at the guard position.
For the Celtics, they get two proven veterans that will start for the team next season. Pairing Chandler with Horford makes a dangerous frontcourt with good offense and defense and Bledsoe will be among the top offensive options in Boston, alongside star PG Isaiah Thomas.
If these NBA rumors are true, will the Celtics, with veterans Bledsoe and Chandler, be good enough to challenge LeBron James and the Cavs for the top of the East?
