Serena Williams versus Venus Williams could happen in the semifinals of the 2016 US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York. If the sisters meet in the last four, they would meet again in the tennis Grand Slam in N.Y. for the second straight year.
The Williams sisters met in the quarterfinals last year when Serena won in three sets, 6-2, 1-6 and 6-3. Serena moved on to the semifinals but lost her match against Robert Vinci of Italy in three sets, 6-2, 4-6 and 4-6.
Both Serena and Venus have won the US Open title in the past. Serena has six (1999, 2002, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014) while here sister has two (1999 and 2009). But before they can match up against each other in the semifinals, they must win first their next two matches.
In the fourth round, Serena, the top seed in this tournament and world number on, will face Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan and Venus will face Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic. The Williams sisters are set to return to court on Monday.
Serena has not lost a set in this Grand Slam but said in an interview that he is not yet satisfied with his performance. The top player in the world said that he expects to improve in the second week of competition.
Venus struggled in the first round, winning 6-2, 5-7 and 6-2 against Kateryna Kozlova and won in straight sets in his next two matches.
If Serena and Venus Williams meets in the semifinals, this would be the 38th meeting in their career. Serena is ahead of their head-to-head meetings in their career, 16-11.
