USA, others draw opponents for Copa America 2016

The stage is set for top seeds USA, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico as to which teams they will play come game day, this after the revealing of the draw for the 2016 Centennial Copa America that was held in New York City.

The tournament will run from June 3 to 26 and for Group A, which will have topseed team USA, it will also have Colombia, Costa Rica and Paraguay; Group B will have topseed Brazil, Ecuador, Haiti and Peru; Group C will feature topseed Mexico, Uruguay, Jamaica and Venezuela; and Group D will have topseed Argentina, Chile, Panama and Bolivia.

The top two in the group stages will then advance to the quarterfinals, then the top four will make it to the semifinals and the two squads to the championship.

For the opening match in Group A will have host USA against Colombia on June 3; Brazil will debut on June 4 against Ecuador; Mexico will face Uruguay on June 5; and Argentina will play Chile on June 6.

The games will be played all over the United States namely in Seattle, Santa Clara in California, Pasadena, Glendale, Houston, Orlando, Chicago, Philadelphia, East Rutherford in New Jersey and Foxbrough.

Copa America is a scheduled men’s association football tournament and is in celebration of the centenary of CONMEBOL and the Copa America. The 2016 edition of the tournament is the first in its history to be hosted outside of South America since its inception in 1916. The US hosting was agreed upon between officials of CONMEBOL and CONCACAF as a special edition between the usual four-year-cycle.

The tournament will feature an expanded field of 16 teams with 10 from CONMEBOL and six form CONCACAF. Although the winner of the tournament will not receive an invitation to the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, since Chile already qualified by winning the 2015 Copa America.
