The top two ranked players in the ATP rankings will meet in the 2016 Australian Open final in Melbourne, Australia on Sunday with Novak Djokovic of Serbia aiming to defend his Aussie Open crown against Andy Murray of Great Britain.
Djokovic and Murray, also seeded first and second in the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, had different paths in making the final as Djokovic had an easy win over rival Roger Federer while Murray had to dig deep against challenger Milos Raonic in the Aussie Open semifinals.
Djokovic had little trouble against Federer winning the first two sets, 6-1 6-2 and finished off the Swiss in four sets, 3-6 6-3 in just two and a half hours in their semifinals match-up.
Meanwhile, Murray had to come back from 2-to-1 sets down, 4-6 7-5 6-7 (4) and win the final two sets, 6-4 6-2 to advance to the championship round.
Murray admitted that Djokovic has played better in the last two matches compared to the Serbian’s performances in the earlier rounds.
“I saw quite a bit of his [Djokovic’s] match with Simon, and I saw the first two sets of the match last night. Obviously he played extremely well yesterday from the tennis that I saw,” Murray shared via the tournament’s official website.
“Played very well. Came out hitting the ball extremely clean from the beginning and put Roger under pressure immediately at the beginning of the match. Played extremely well there.”
Djokovic, who is the defending champion in the Australian Grand Slam, struggled against Gilles Simon of France in the fourth round but won in five sets, 6-3 6-7 (1) 6-4 4-6 6-3. He defeated Kei Nishikori of Japan in the quarterfinals, 6-3 6-2 6-4 and Federer in the semis.
Murray, who won the 2012 Australian Open, defeated David Ferrer of Spain in the quarters, 6-3 5-7 (5) 6-2 6-3 and Raonic in the semis to advance to the 2016 Australian Open final.
Djokovic has dominated Murray in their 30 head-to-head career meetings with the Serbian winning 21 and just nine for Murray. Djokovic is also 10-1 in the last 11 meetings against Murray.
